K.W. Barrett Elementary School

PTA Meeting Minutes

February 5, 2019

Welcome and Introductions

7:05 p.m. – PTA President Dan Wendell called the meeting to order.

Approval January 2019 Minutes

Lisa Richman Kelly made a motion to approve the January PTA Minutes; Derek Nisco seconded the motion; minutes approved.

Principal Report, Dan Redding

·       We skipped the principal report to get right to the APS Update

APS Facilities Update, John Chadwick and Steven Bernheisel

·       John Chadwick apologizes about temperature issues. Says they did not know about temperature constraints for installing turf.

o   Need 5 days of 50 degrees including night to put down the rug (grass).

o   Turf is not likely to go in until April

·       Maybe by the end of the week they can let the kids use blacktop again.

·       Facilities will fix some other issues in the meantime

o   Plan to fix muddy area around 2-5 year old playground.

o   Want to fix an area where roof drains onto sidewalk and causes ice

o   They have put down sod around large playground

·       They also need to find out how long the kids have to stay off sod/carpet after it's installed.

Parent question: Is there any way to cover the turf area temporarily? APS: No, that may damage it.

Parent question: Could we possibly utilize the front area for the kids to play there? It would be hard to separate the kids into two areas and we would need more monitors. Dan Redding believes reopening the blacktop will improve things dramatically, so the idea to use the front is probably not necessary and would be difficult.

Teacher Report, 1st Grade

·       Nothing new from the teachers except a thank you to PTA for approving the extra grants. The first grade team is especially excited about the Phonics instruction grant.

Treasurer Report, Dan Wendell

·       There was not much activity this month with primary credits this month from retail store contributions from Amazon and box tops totaling nearly $400 ; primary debits approximately $150 for Family Fitness night for instructors and prizes

·       Checking: $78,744.08

·       Savings: $16,776.37

New Business, Dan Wendell

·       The board is working on updating the bylaws and getting approval for next year.

o   We need to find members interested in being on the PTA Board next year. Almost all positions will be open as Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising VP and Internal VP will be open. If you are interested send an email to info@kwbarrettpta.org or contact one of the current board members for more info.

o   We may add a new board position of Past-President. Tracey McLaughlin was a huge help to the board last year and so it seems to make sense for continuity to have the past president around to help the new board.

·       Valentine's Day Dance is the 15th, next Friday, promoting movement and healthy living, every grade has a song assigned to them…kids can practice at home…check it out on Barrett Web site.

o   The child that dances the best from each grade will win a prize.

o   There is a bike and a karaoke machine that will be raffled off.

o   Many other raffles including a fruit basket and Uncle Julios gift card.

o   An email about the dance went out via the PTA mailing list.

·       African American Night is coming up on 2/21 run by the 3rd grade teachers

·       Read-A-Thon is coming soon. It is our biggest fundraiser. Starts March 1st and goes through the 11th. It is a crowdfunding fundraiser. Each family should send it out info via social media to get friends and family to donate. Kids promise to read 20 minutes a day for the donations.

o   There will be a Drop Everything and Read on the first day

o   Dress up as a literary character day on March 7th

o   On the 11th there will be a pajama day to celebrate the end of the Read-a-Thon

o   The goal is to raise $10,000

o   The principals are issuing a challenge and the winning class gets to choose what character they will dress up as.

o   There will be prizes for all of the kids that participate.

·       Pupatella Restaurant night will be March 14th – in honor of pi day eat some pizza pie.

·       Friday, 2/8, 8-8:30 am school board liaison will meet with people in the library

Shout Outs, Dan Wendell

·       Thank you to the Polsinelli's for the job they did on Family Fitness Night. Over 80 people turned up for the event. It was a lot of fun and great to see everyone moving.

o   Next year we should consider starting a little later and perhaps moving it so it is not on a Friday before a 3 day weekend.

Adjournment

·       The meeting adjourned at 7:42 p.m.

·       Next meeting on Tuesday, March 5
