APS School Board tonight approved (and acted on) the following relating to 2020-2021 APS school calendar and the APS Elementary School Planning process:
2020-2021 APS School Calendar:
In a 4-1 vote (with Board Member Reid Goldstein voting against), the Board approved the Superintendent's recommended calendar, which will have a school start date of Monday, August 31. (see attached calendar)
A motion offered by Mr. Goldstein to start school on Tuesday, September 8 (day after Labor Day), was defeated 1-4.
Board Chair Tannia Talento offered an amendment for school principals to make accommodations for students who are unable to attend school prior to Labor Day. The amendment was defeated 2-3. It was noted that APS's Policy Implementation Procedures (PIPs) give principals discretion to excuse absence, including for pre-Labor Day and Inauguration absences.
APS Elementary School Planning process:
In a 4-1 vote (with Board Member Goldstein voting against), the Board approved the Interim Superintendent's Recommended "Proposal 1: School Moves" effective for the 2021‐2022 school year. Details/specifics of the motion is at the end of this email (language of the motion is from APS).
A motion offered by Goldstein to table the moves until a later date, so that APS can assess (and incorporate) the recently-released (December 2019) 10-year projection, was defeated 1-4.
REMINDER:
APS Board Chair Tannia Talento will be at Barrett again tomorrow (Friday) morning at our Friday Volunteers meeting. Prior to Ms. Talento's arrival, Andrea Shaw will give an update on the Elementary School Planning/Boundary process at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will be held in Barrett's cafeteria. All are invited to attend.
The Board approved the Interim Superintendent's Recommended "Proposal 1: School Moves" effective for the 2021‐2022 school year. "Proposal 1: School Moves," concurrent with new elementary school boundaries expected to be established in the fall of 2020, and 725 new elementary school seats at the Reed site, achieves the following:
•Moves the majority of McKinley students to the Reed site;
•Moves the Arlington Traditional School program to current McKinley site;
•Moves the Key Immersion program to the current ATS site; and
•Key school site becomes a new neighborhood school.
This proposal does not constitute a boundary change under the general APS boundary policy, and in any event is intended to take precedence over that policy as to these specific matters. Rather, boundary adjustments and grandfathering considerations will be included in the Fall 2020 process.

The APS School Board will have a meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. On the agenda is the recommended actions for the board relating to the 2020-2021 school calendar and the Elementary School Planning which will move choice schools but also "prepares [APS] for the Fall 2020 boundary process".
