[KWPTA] ACTION: Support PTA Letter Raising Concerns with APS' Proposed Cuts to Exemplary Projects (Discovery Lab and Family Engagement)

At our last PTA meeting earlier this month, concerns were raised with the Superintendent's APS FY 2022 Proposed Budget, which includes a proposal to cut Exemplary Projects at all schools countywide by reducing the number of staff to 0.5 ("In order to move toward a more equitable allocation, those schools that have more than a 0.5 FTE staff member will reduce to 0.5 FTE.", page 7 of the Addendum to the FY 2022 Superintendent's Proposed Budget).

We have drafted a letter to the APS School Board raising concerns with this proposed cut and urging the board to not go through with any cuts to Exemplary Projects. As you may know, Barrett has two very important and critical Exemplary Projects (which are led by Dr. Laurie Sullivan and Mr. Arturo Ramirez): 1) Project Discovery, which focuses on hands-on learning in science and technology, and 2) Project Interaction, which promotes Family Engagement and teaches communication arts.

This is an important initiative so we hope to get as much support from the Barrett community as possiblePlease review the attached letter, and let me know if you'd like to sign the letter (for now, the letter includes the names of current PTA officers, officer candidates for next year's PTA, and Barrett parents who have reached out to us expressing their concerns with the proposed cuts). We will be sending the letter to the school board next week.

I will be at the tables by the basketball court at Lubber Run Community Center on Monday (March 22) from 4:00-5:00 p.m. and Tuesday (March 23) from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. for those who'd like to sign onto the letter. If you are unable to meet me at those times, please let me know and I can arrange another time/location for you to sign.

In addition to supporting the PTA letter, you can also contact APS to express your concerns with the proposed cuts, by emailing APS at engage@apsva.us OR submitting your comments online at:

Please note that the School Board is set to adopt the proposed budget on April 8 and act on the final budget on May 6.

Thank you,

Will
