Virtual Author Talk

Allergic: A Graphic Novel

March 22, 7-8pm

READ is thrilled to be hosting our first (virtual) author event with READ friend and local author Megan Wagner Lloyd and illustrator Michelle Mee Nutter, the collaborators of the much anticipated graphic novel Allergic (Scholastic). When I reached out to Megan to see if she would be willing to do a virtual event with READ, she did not hesitate for which I am so thankful.

I have been getting alerts for over six months about their book.  It is definitely the most anticipated graphic novel of 2021.  See the description below.

One of my favorite things pre-COVID times was helping with author events.  I loved watching students listen and watch intently then raise their hand excitedly to ask a question.  I purposely made this event in the evening so that families could attend together, and you could experience that same joy.  Plus I think it will be great to learn together the how's and why's of creating a graphic novel, one of my favorite genres.

(PS We are trying a new registration system.  Fingers-crossed it works.)

Allergic

A coming-of-age middle-grade graphic novel featuring a girl with severe allergies who just wants to find the perfect pet!

At home, Maggie is the odd one out. Her parents are preoccupied with the new baby they're expecting, and her younger brothers are twins and always in their own world. Maggie thinks a new puppy is the answer, but when she goes to select one on her birthday, she breaks out in hives and rashes. She's severely allergic to anything with fur!

Can Maggie outsmart her allergies and find the perfect pet? With illustrations by Michelle Mee Nutter, Megan Wagner Lloyd draws on her own experiences with allergies to tell a heartfelt story of family, friendship, and finding a place to belong.

Ages 8-12

Praise for Allergic:

"Allergic is the sweetest story you'll read all year. A touching chronicle of a young girl's severe allergies woven into a meaningful journey of friendship, family, and self-discovery." -- Terri Libenson, New York Times bestselling author of Invisible Emmie

* "A heartachingly enjoyable tale of resilience." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"Readers will root for this realistic and relatable fifth grader, who's capable of kindness as well as envy and self-doubt... readers will easily identify with her trials and accomplishments." -- School Library Journal
