As you know, our recent effort to raise money to purchase grocery gift cards is done separately from our Barrett PTA funds. As a 501(c)3 that is not organized as a charity, the Barrett PTA may not use our regular PTA funds to provide direct financial support to individuals or families, regardless of need (though, we are able to provide school supplies, for example, to further the educational needs of our community). Our effort is being organized and led by community members, with the support of many friends, families, and neighbors. As an example, the accounting below does not include the generous contribution of Jennifer Sauter-Price w/R.E.A.D., who donated books for our last distribution, and Barrett parent Jessica Gomez, who provided us with a lot of holiday candy from CVS as part of our last distribution.
Since you have entrusted us with your generous donations, I want to be sure we provide you with as much information as possible, in a transparent manner.
As of April 14, the Barrett/Arlington community donated a total of $5,500, including:
- $4800 in cash donations and $700 in grocery gift card donations
- donations from 56 individuals/families
In addition, we received 75 $50 Safeway gift cards from the "One Pantry at a Time" GoFundMe effort led by Arlington teachers, for a total value of $3750.
We distributed a total of 169 $50 grocery gift cards:
- 128 on the day of in-person distribution (Wednesday, April 8)
- 41 were mailed on April 14 to families who did not receive a gift card on April 8, but left their names and addresses
- 76 were for Safeway, 91 for Harris Teeter, and 2 for Giant
- for a total value of $8450
I can provide additional information, further breakdown and detail, should anyone be interested. I will continue to provide updated information as our donation effort continues.
