Firstly, thank you to everyone who donated to our effort to distribute grocery gift cards today to Barrett families in need. Details of how much we've raised and how much we've given away so far are below.
Secondly, in addition to grocery gift card distribution, we gave away books and Easter/holiday candies that were generously donated to us by:
- Jennifer Sauter-Price, Founder and Executive Director of R.E.A.D. (and former Barrett PTA President), who donated an assortment of books in English and Spanish; and
- Jessica Gomez, a Barrett mom (to a 5th grade Barrett student) and Manager at the Ballston Mall CVS, who provided us with more than 120 bags of candy from CVS as part of the distribution!
Thank you to Jessica and Jennifer for their generosity and thoughtfulness!
While the distribution of the gift card was a "success", it was also a sobering reminder of the financial need of many families in our community during this national health emergency. A line started forming an hour before distribution began; we ran out of gift cards within 15 minutes after we began distribution. In total, we distributed 128 $50 grocery gift cards (majority of which for Safeway and Harris Teeter) - in addition to a lot of candies and books. There were 40 families who did not receive a gift card - so we took down their names and addresses to order more gift cards and mail it directly to them. From our existing available donated funds (with a little bit more help), we should be able to purchase enough to mail out the requested gift cards.
In addition to the 75 $50 Safeway gift cards (total value of $3,750) from a Go Fund Me effort led by Arlington teachers, we also have received, to date:
- $3703 in monetary donations; and
- $700 in grocery gift cards donated by Barrett families ($550 in Harris Teeter gift cards; $100 in Giant gift cards, and another $50 Safeway gift card).
We are hopeful that we can do another distribution - either in person or by mail - in the future should we be able to raise enough funds. We are also exploring other ways to help our community.
