We are planning on doing our next distribution for Barrett families on Thursday, August 13 (date, time and location to be confirmed), which will include a package of essential food items, books, masks, and a burrito dinner! In addition to the many donations and contributions from our PTA members, and our community as a whole, we've also received generous support from various organizations and businesses over the past several months. For our next distribution, we will be receiving support from the following:
- Gabe and Katherine Thompson, Barrett family and owner of Thompson Italian (https://thompsonitalian.com/), will be donating 500 lbs. of rice and 500 lbs. of beans, which will provide each family with 2.5 lbs. each of rice and beans.
- District Taco will be donating $1,000 worth of burritos that we will be giving out to families. This was made possible by Barrett dad (and ultramarathon runner), Michael Wardian, who ran 62.3 miles to every District Taco in the D.C. area (eating tacos along the way) on June 20. We will be providing the additional funds (of $1,400) so that we can have 300 burritos available on the day of distribution.
- Lauren Smith Janzen, Barrett teacher who has been volunteering with the Million Mask Challenge, has arranged for us to receive and distribute 200 adult and 300 child masks.
- Tuckahoe PTA, led by their president, Allison Glatfelter, has donated to us $1,600 for our distribution efforts. Tuckahoe has also been helping out with several other Arlington PTAs' distribution efforts.
How You Can Help
In addition to rice and beans, we are looking at providing cooking oil, potatoes, onions and corn meal (specifically, "masa instantanea de maiz") as part of the package of essential food items for Barrett families. We hope to have enough to provide 200 packages for Barrett families. If you are able to, please consider purchasing the following items on your next trip to the grocery store (by Monday, August 10) - we are hoping to have 200 of each item (see attachment for a helpful "grocery list"):
- 48 oz. of vegetable oil (Safeway has a sale until next Tuesday - $2.99 for Crisco vegetable oil)
- 3 lb. bag of white potatoes (about $4.00 per bag)
- 3 lb. bag of yellow onions (about $3.50 per bag)
- 4 lb. bag of cornmeal/masa instantanea de maiz (about $3.50 per bag; see attached for recommended brands).
We can arrange for pickup of donated items (just respond to this email); or if you'd like, please feel free to drop it off at the front door of 407 N. Upton Ct. (townhouse right across from Barrett).
