I was in the midst of writing a "Happy 1st Day of School" email yesterday at about 9:30am, when it became clear that that was not going to be the appropriate message. 🙁
Yesterday was chaotic and frustrating. On behalf of the school system, I want to apologize for the disruption and disappointment that everyone experienced. It was not the way we would have liked to begin the 2020-2021 school year. Unfortunately, much the same can be said about most of 2020. However, I received many messages about students, parents, teachers, and administrators pushing on to overcome the technology challenges, and, in many cases, successfully connecting and starting lessons. Congratulations!
I'm told many of yesterday's technology problems have been resolved. As of 9:10am this morning, we have 25,273 APS-provided student devices active on our network, of those 18,709 are from elementary and middle school and 6,564 are from high school. Some students need to reset their connection and we are working with those individuals who may be having any issues. We will do another status check at 2:30pm this afternoon.
I want to thank everyone for the work and attention it took to begin a virtual start of school, and for everyone's patience, flexibility, and dedication in focusing on our primary mission: student success! We are in unique times and are called upon to innovate and pivot to maintain our objectives and aspirations.
And (trying again), I want to wish you, your students, and your school community a successful and rewarding school year!
